Navigation Mural

These panels are from the S.S. Normandie. They were designed by Jean Dupas and executed by Charles Champigneulle for the corners of the Grand Salon in the first class section of this luxury ocean liner.

The subject of these beautiful photographs is a current installation at the Metropolitan Museum in NY. The title of the work on exhibition is "The Chariot of Poseidon." The photos show about 60% of one of 4 murals that depicted fantastical scenes of nautical mythology mixed with oceanic activities over the centuries.

The "Dupas murals" were mounted in the First Class Grand Salon of SS NORMANDIE – the pre-WW2 French Line flagship and the greatest ocean liner that ever sailed. This particular mural was on the port (left) side forward.

Each of the 4 murals was approximately 50 feet wide X 20 feet high. The murals were comprised of hundreds of 4 foot tall X 2 foot wide X 2 inch thick glass panels. In order to protect the surfaces of the images and have them "read" properly they were all drawn in reverse; then the clear glass panels were "reverse painted" on the back of the glass using gold, silver, platinum, palladium and some colored enamel; finally, the entire rear surface was covered with black enamel so that the outlines of the images were properly depicted.

The Dupas murals were among many hundreds of exquisite works featured aboard the iconic Art Deco floating museum, SS NORMANDIE

MIOTTEL MUSEUM of San Francisco has 8 or 10 of the individual panels from various murals as does the FORBES Gallery in NY.
